Monthly Archives: February 2012

We had 7 Birthdays in February… Wow!

We had a total of 7 birthdays for the month of February in classroom 6. If you did not schedule a walk around the sun, please see front desk to schedule this. I love our Birthday Walk Around the Sun celebrations. What I love most is seeing the parents faces as we start with, “Once upon a time, there was this very, very handsome man.…. and this very, very, VERY beautiful woman.…..” As we turn the story over to the parents to talk about the day their child was born, there are always tears in their eyes.…
The child proudly carries the globe as they walk around the sun for each year of their loves… while Mom or Dad tells the story to the class of their child’s growth and milestones along the way…
then we sing…

The earth goes around the sun tra la,
The earth goes around the sun tra la.…
Around and around and around and around
The earth goes around the sun tra la..”

After the parents tell their story, it’s the children’s turn to share with the Birthday child what they love about them.….

Today we had one child say.… “What I love about you is your kind heart…” this was so sincere, our children get it!! In classroom 6, one of the biggest compliments is to be called a “Golden Rock Star” or a “Triple, Quadruple Diamond Rock Star“
It’s crazy to think that some of the children started together in the infant room, and have been together all the way up through Primary.… and up.…My daughter Olivia is a great example of this, she started in infant program with some of her classmates when she was 3 months old and is now age 10 in fourth grade.

After affirmations, we say our birthday poem..

The Birthday Child

Everything’s been different,
All the day long.
Lovely things have happened,
Nothing has gone wrong.
Nobody has scolded me,
Everyone has smiled.
Isn’t it delicious
To be a birthday child?

Rose Fyleman

Then of course we sing the Happy Birthday Song… (sometimes with Cha, cha cha’s or without…)

I just want to say Thank you to all the parents for sharing this special celebration with us..

Can i make a collage please?

On the road to creative writing, the children are introduced to collage making. This is a perfect opportunity for students(of all ages) to cut and paste pictures of their choice onto a blank page. Some may choose random pictures, each one telling a different story or insight into that child’s likes and dislikes. Some may choose obvious themes such as animals or all things blue. Either way seeing the children create is fun to watch.

We are needing your help though.
We are stalled in our creations because we have no more child friendly, age appropriate magazines, newspapers and catalogs. We would love to have what you are no longer using.

PLEASE drop them off at classroom 7 and thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness.

Lower Elementary Asia Study Presentation Information

We are all sensitive to the fact that learning be supported at home, and we all intend to do the best we can.  The easiest students to teach are the curious, interested, motivated ones. Examples of things to do at home to foster those qualities might include:  finding an insect outside, looking up its scientific name and feeding habits and making a “home” for it in a container or talking about why it should be set free; reading books every night before bed; planning and cooking a meal together; counting all the change in our pockets and then going out for ice cream; telling stories; writing letters to grandparents and friends; and taking pictures of the places we go and then share them with the class.  We are all invested in supporting our children’s learning.  Our goal is not to have homework provoke anxiety and get in the way of family activities or the necessary downtime to help make our children the cool, funny kids they are.

That being said below is the information for our upcoming Asia presentations. Once again, we suggest our first years do an Asia presentation, we encourage our second years to participate and highly recommend all of our third years work on these projects at home.

Dear Parents,

To further our study of Asia, we are having our older students choose a topic from the enclosed list and then present their findings to the class.  Younger students may also choose a project to present, although it is not mandatory for them.  The younger students will be working on researching an Asian animal in class and will then have the option to present. Older children will also be working on their projects in class (some of them have already started) and will be required to present. Our goal is to have the older children prepare this presentation both at school and at home.  Parental help is welcomed (and encouraged)! This project is due in approximately ten weeks. Presentations will start on Friday, May 4th and go for as long as it takes all the children scheduled to present their projects to the class.

Please look at the list of Asia Projects with your child, and then let him/her select one. We are seeking a variety of projects, so this step may involve some negotiation. 20 ABC books or salt dough maps will not make for a good use of our presentation time! You will need to contact me via email once your child’s decision is made. I will then contact you with your child’s presentation date and time if you’d like to attend. The deadline for this will be Friday, March 9. Due to planning and the large volume of presentations, no last minute presentation proposals will be accepted. All presentations will be scheduled before Friday, March 9.

This activity is designed to increase the student’s knowledge, prepare him or her for public speaking, and introduce the idea of deadlines.  All of the other children will benefit by learning more aboutAsiaas well.

Plan on about ten to fifteen minutes for the presentation, followed by a question and answer session.  We will practice in school but are also asking you to please have your child practice their presentation at home to help it flow smoothly.

Thank you.  As always, we appreciate your help and involvement.  If you have questions, please email me.

Sincerely,

Rosemary

CR 2: Phonetic Genius

When children first begin the activity of writing words and ideas it is a process of sound recall and recognition.  The children recognize which sounds come in which order, and write them according to how they recall their presentation.  This results in a phonetic representation of words as we know them, and the results are charming and memorable.  The sounds may be out of order completely, and this is absolutely normal.

Why don’t we correct the child’s work right away?  How can we allow for such glaring errors?

It’s all about readiness and confidence.  Reading and writing are not quick-fix concepts you can hammer out in a fortnight.  The child who is learning to “sound it out” is just becoming confident with a mastery of sounds and, further, an ability to manipulate sounds to create words and even sentences.  To correct a child in this stage is confusing to their intellect and deflating to their sense of self.  Over time we will present “sight” words and begin introductory spelling based on readiness.

The child that comes to me so incredibly excited, begging for the spelling of a certain word is ready for a spelling introduction.  The child asking for spelling words because they are “too hard” to sound out just needs more practice and confidence building exercises.  “You can do it!”  Every child needs to hear this, and we Montessori directresses are their endless cheerleaders (and biggest fans).

While writing, Andrew told me today:

“Did you know that please is sleep backwards and sleep is please backwards?  I learned it myself and no one even told me.”

This is a child ready for a spelling lesson and some blending/segmenting review.  Obviously, the phonogram “ee” is substituting each similar sound, and the similar appearance of the words on paper gave him the conclusion of direct backwards relationship.

Still, what confidence!  Is it perfect?  Does that matter?  The world is at his fingertips!

Best,

Ms. Adrienne

Community and Friends

Wow, how awesome to have The Little Red Hen play come to our class. It was fun to watch as well as really instill all the things we have been working so hard on this past month.

We have been talking about being friend and helping one another. Which to my surprise they love to do. I have kids helping one another to wipe their friends face , pour someone smaller than them a glass of water, pulling out a chair for an unexpected visitor and shaking hands with one another and making eye contact.

It warms the heart to watch and can make the world of difference in not only them but the people who the affect.

Celebration and self care tip

Arianna R celebrated her first birthday on Feb. 26th. Happy Birthday Arianna!!

It’s hard to say “Goodbye” to Estela and Penelope!! They will move to the Toddler environment on March 19. Estela will be in Ms. Hillary’s class, while Penelope will move to Ms. Maria’s class. We would like to wish them good luck on their new journey!!

Self care tips: When feeding solids to an infant, try homemade foods first; this way, you can control what they eat so you can provide more nutrition and variety to their menu. This avoids food from a jar filled with preservatives while kids can enjoy homemade food.

Weather/clothing: Weather is really wonderful now; since it’s a bit cooler, we spend more time outside in the patio so they have a chance to get some fresh air. Please remember to bring your child’s shoes and socks.

Also, please label everything (including bottles) with the child’s first and last name.

This is the way we wash our hands!

How many times a day do the children wash their hands? Let’s count!
1.) Right when you come into the classroom in the morning.
2.) Before snack.
3.) After you go to the bathroom.
4.) Did you put your fingers in your mouth??
5.) You just came in from Outdoor Environment!
6.) Achoo!!
7.) Time for luunch!
8.) Did you just go potty?
9.) Time to come in from recess!
10.) You are the bird helper this week!
11.) Back in from after school recess!
12.) Before lateday snack!

The children and the teachers wash their hands about 12 times a day. Our towel bin is overflowing at the end of everyday. We are getting to the point were we don’t need to remind them as often, but now many of the children have gotten into the wonderful habit of cleanliness. Prevent the spread of disease. Those pesky germs are everywhere!!

Germs glorious germs!

We all thought it was just our allergies right? Well it was allergies and many ailments. You can’t pass the lobby without seeing the update board sharing what has been diagnosed and in which classrooms.
Even though the teachers and staff take proper measures to keep our environments clean, those germs sneak in. I wanted to take this time though to ask that we all remind ourselves that it takes all of us doing simple things that can help keep us healthy.

*wash hands when entering a new environnment
*wash hands before eating
*encouarge your children to wash hands after sneezing and/or using a tissue to clean their nose (parents do this also to set a good example)
*If your child shows signs of a fever, keep them home to monitor
*have your child bathe each night and return to school in clean clothing (another way to keep germs away)

If you have healthy habits your family uses consistently PLEASE share. I would love to hear them.
