Queridos padres y madres de Upper Elementary

Hola a todos,

Some of you might have heard from your child that there is a play in Spanish we will be presenting tomorrow. I would like to share with you that this is a VERY SIMPLE “play” which they children (some of them-not everyone wanted to participate)have worked on for a couple of weeks. Since it’s their fist time doing this type of activity many of them are not that comfortable and did not want to have many people watching them, so I wanted to keep it very low key and help them have a simple experience this time and hopefully next time they will be ready for a bigger audience; therefore I did not invite parents. They will be performing it to their classmates and LE kids. I will try to get some pictures for you to enjoy!!!

Gracias,

Marzo already???

I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling this way.…February is goooooone already? I must say though that it was a short but very productive month.

We had some wonderful Spanish lessons in all the different Primary classrooms…

Classroom 1 learning about mammals (el caballo/horse, el gorila, el elefante, el perro/dog, la zebra, la vaca/cow, el gato/ cat, la girafa). And now, this week we already started learning about “pájaros-birds”

Classroom 2 and 6 had the opportunity to review the colors, the family, and some animals as well.
And now it is officially the “mamíferos-mammals’s” month in CR 2 so we are focusing on these (el cerdo/pig, el caballo/horse, el elefante, el perro/dog, la girafa, el oso/bear). They have also had the change to do the King-Kong dance… which we all really enjoy :)
And it is the “reptiles-reptiles’s” month in classroom 6 so we are focusing on these (la serpiente/the serpent, la iguana, la tortuga, el cocodrilo y la lagartija).

Classroom 7 had the change to learn about “pájaros-birds”. These are the ones we learned (el loro/parrot, el alcón/eagle, el pelícano, el buho/owl, el gallo/rooster and el flamenco/flamingo). This month they will be learning about el “mar-sea”. Which will bring us to learn about: la ballena/the whale, el caracol/snail, la foca/seal, el delfín, los peces/fish, el pulpo/octopus and el tiburón/shark).

In all the classrooms we had a great time playing some simple games like: the rooster game, tingo-tango, el gato y el ratón. They also love playing with the fly swatter (my “magic wands”) identifying and saying the vocabulary…this is my favorite part, since I get to hear them speak and it’s always very rewarding to hear when they talk with no accent or with almost no accent at all :) .….MUY EMOCIONANTE!!!

Estudiantes de Middle School entrevistan al señor Antonio!!!

A couple of weeks ago the Middle school students had the opportunity to interview a parent, el señor Antonio (Almas’s dad from Classroom 6). He was a wonderful guest and I really appreciate him joining us for this activity. It was wonderful to see the students trying hard and understanding what he had to say. Of course for some of them it was easier to understand and speak than for others.…and some of them got very nervous at the beginning when they were asking or answering questions.…but as time passed they started feeling much more comfortable and spoke more relaxed and confidently.

This is definitely the kind of experience the students need to practice what they have been learning in class. It gives them such confidence and is a great feeling for them once they see how the pieces fit together.

This is what one of the students who participated on the interview that day had to say.
“A few days ago we had a parent come to our class. He is a pilot and we got to interview him in Spanish. We asked him questions such as what his name was, where he lived, where he had learned Spanish, his favorite color, movie, animal etc… He had learned Spanish as a young boy.It was a great experience for us to practice our Spanish”.

I would like to invite other parents who know Spanish to come and let the students interview you. We could have you come to UE as well.

Please e-mail me if interested. spanish@desertgardenmontessori.org

MUCHAS GRACIAS ANTONIO!!!

Todos estan invitados!!! Everybody is invited!!!

It is with great excitement that I would like to extend an invitation to all the DGM community to go and see the Ballet Folclorico de Antioquia this Friday February 3rd at 8:00pm at the Scottsdale Center for the performing arts. In fact, I am taking the UE and MS school students to the 11:00 am performance. But it would be wonderful if other members of the DGM community could go and support this wonderful company too.

Inspired by the vibrant culture of its native Colombia, this vivacious young dance company has won widespread praise around the world, including at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing for its fiery, virtuoso performances of traditional Colombian folk music and dance.

I know how important it is for you to learn and discover other cultures and I would love for you to come and take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy this great show from my native COLOMBIA.

Hope to see you there!!!
Espero verlos allí!!!

Es la y son las…en Upper Elementary

Queridos padres y madres de familia,

This month of January has been an exciting one for UE. They have started the year with the right foot (this is actually good.…..con el pie derecho). If they didn’t mentioned it to you,  last Friday they had the opportunity to tried a Rosca de reyes (king’s cake). Some of them even got to decorate it, they made the glaze themselves and spread it on the cake, very simple but fun. And unlike in the Gallinita roja’s story (the red hen) they all got to eat it.….actually devour it :-o They loved it!!!

We are now focusing on numbers and telling the time in Spanish. We’ll continue to work on this for the next couple of weeks. So, maybe next time you want to know the time ask them to say it en Espanol!!! It should sound something along the lines of : ” Es la una y diez” (1:10) or “son las cuatro y veinte”(4:20)…

Hasta Pronto,

Noticias de Espanol!!!

Queridos padres y madres de familia,

I would like to share with you that  a little before Christmas brake I started visiting CR 2, 6 and 7 once a week to do some Spanish. I was already visiting CR 1 Infant, 8, 10 and 11 daily. It’s has been a wonderful experience seeing the different environments and how children welcome my presence and the Spanish language in each one of them. I love being able to see so many faces and working at all the different levels. It has been very intense and very interesting as well. I will do my best to keep you all posted on all the Noticias from each classroom.

Sinceramente,
