What is the 8th Grade Community Service Project?

The Community Service Project is a capstone service-based project for all 8th graders at Desert Garden Montessori.  Each project is a long-term, individualized project, typically taking six months or more to complete.  The projects are student-designed and student-led.  These projects are intended to be a demonstration of student self-management skills, a show of students’ desire to help their community, and their ability to develop and implement a goal over an extended period of time.

The project is broken into four parts:

  1. Part A: Investigating (researching and developing a proposal)
  2. Part B: Planning (creating a plan and gathering materials)
  3. Part C: Taking Action (engaging in the community service work)
  4. Part D: Reflecting (reflecting on and sharing about their service work)

Each part is assessed using the rubrics you can view in the attached overview document. Students are given a final grade on this project when it is complete in May.

Some of our students are officially at the phase of their projects where they need community support – your support!  We will be sharing student projects as they are available.  Please join me in supporting each of the students as they communicate their projects to the community.  Please view all of the current 8th Grade Community Service Projects below.
